Ancestry Library Edition

by lener, posted on February 6, 2015

In February 2015, Collections added Ancestry Library Edition, ProQuest’s version of the consumerAncestry product Ancestry.com.  Library Edition contains billions of records from census data, vital records, directories, photographs, and multimedia.  There are 7,000 databases within Ancestry, making it very robust but also challenging to master.

It’s important to understand that not all features of Ancestry.com are included in the Library Edition.  Much of the personalized functionality is only available to individual subscribers.  Some of the features not available to Library Edition users are:

  • connecting with other members
  • publishing family history photo books
  • building family trees
  • recent obituaries
  • historical newspaper collections
  • databases from third party providers (such as Gale)

Despite these restrictions, Library Edition is a valuable addition to our historical collections. ProQuest has many resources available to help researchers including:

Marc Brodsky is a resource person for this database.  Collections will arrange specialized training upon request and troubleshoot access problems.
