New Journal and E-book Archives from Taylor and Francis

The University Libraries regularly adds new digital content throughout the year. While some are targeted purchases, i.e. backfiles from a single journal title or a small ebook collection, other purchases are much larger in size and scope. Our recent acquisitions from Taylor and Francis fall into that later category. We’ve just added over 25,000 unlimited access ebooks, more than doubling our perpetual ownership of ebooks from them. These include titles from both their STEM and Humanities & Social Sciences collections. In addition we have added several more of their journal archives covering titles in the following subject areas. Purchases like this allow us to provide online access for the university community to important content that may have originally only been available in hard copy form.

Journal Archive Subject Package (Volume 1 to 2006)
Allied & Public Health
Clinical Psychiatry & Neuroscience
Criminology & Law
Mathematics & Statistics
Pharmaceutical Science & Toxicology
Sport, Leisure & Tourism
Sport Science & Medicine
Strategic, Defence & Security Studies

New Resources Acquired in FY24

Collection Management works to build unique and dynamic collections of national significance to support all areas of scholarship at Virginia Tech. We regularly assess usage of our resources as we seek to maximize the value of our subscriptions and reflect emerging areas of research at the university. Through prudent management of our budget and data analysis we replace low-use subscriptions with new and requested resources. And, we purchase journal archives and e-book collections with one-time funds or end-of-year money. We do all this to improve access and expand the breadth and depth of the collection, and to save space by replacing and supplementing print resources with online.

New Transformative Agreements for 2024

Several new Read and Publish agreements are available through the University Libraries for 2024. These allow Virginia Tech authors to publish their work open access at reduced or no cost.

All new for this year are journal publishing agreements with American Chemical Society, PLOS, and Royal Society of Chemistry.  We were also able to negotiate expanded title coverage with Cambridge University Press and we became an institutional member of PeerJ to streamline the article acceptance process for their journals.

Information on all available discounts and memberships can be found on our Libguide. Please note that for multi-author works the discounts usually only apply to the institutional affiliation of the corresponding author.

JSTOR Path to Open

Earlier this month JSTOR launched its new Path to Open initiative. Virginia Tech is among over 50 institutions that are supporting this effort financially. While we have long had access to JSTOR subscription databases this is their first foray into Open Access publishing. Members of the Open Knowledge Committee worked with Collections and Technical Services to assess this new model.

This multi-year pilot program provides libraries with affordable access to diverse, high-quality frontlist e-books while supporting small and medium university presses in open access publishing. The collection will grow over time and the books will be converted to open access three years after publication to better support publishers, authors, institutions, and readers worldwide.

The first release contains 100 ebook titles – See https://about.jstor.org/path-to-open/titles/ for the full list. These have been loaded into our library discovery system to facilitate access.

New Transformative Agreements through VIVA

University Libraries at Virginia Tech is pleased to announce three new transformative agreements to bring read and publish access to journals from Cambridge University Press, the International Water Association (IWA), and the Institute of Physics (IOP). These agreements are available through Virginia Tech’s membership in VIVA, the academic library consortium of Virginia. As a result of these agreements, starting January 1, 2023, corresponding authors at Virginia Tech are now able to publish open access articles in nearly 500 more journals at no cost to the authors. Additionally, the Virginia Tech community has expanded access to be able to read content from these publishers. Information on all of our available open access discounts may be found at https://guides.lib.vt.edu/oasf/discounts

VIVA Adds More Streaming Media and DEI Content

VIVA, the academic library consortium for Virginia, regularly reviews and evaluates resources in order to best meet the needs of member institutions across the commonwealth and the faculty and students that they serve. For 2023, VIVA is adding several new databases that provide streaming media or which enhance coverage of important issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These new databases include:

  • Digital Theatre+
  • PsychoTherapy.net
  • Gale Archives of Sexuality & Gender Parts 1 + 2: LGBTQ History Since 1940
  • ProQuest Disability in the Modern World

Descriptions and links for each database may be found on the A-Z list of databases.

Collection Management works to build unique and dynamic collections of national significance to support all areas of scholarship at Virginia Tech. We regularly assess usage and impact of our resources as we seek to maximize the value of our subscriptions and reflect emerging areas of research at the university.

We were able to bring many of our existing resources fully up to date as well as add a wide range of new resources. In addition to specialized resources, we added several interdisciplinary ones such as the New York Times, Policy Commons, and Statista. HathiTrust Copyright Review Program includes federal, state, and local government publications

HathiTrust’s Copyright Review Program makes available published works no longer protected by copyright. The program reviews US, Canadian, Australian, and UK publications.  While the highest priority is published monographs, many serial and series publications are available.

As of June 1, 2022, HathiTrust’s collection included nearly 1.4 million U.S. federal documents. HathiTrust’s Federal Documents Advisory Committee, among other tasks, explores “methods and operations to characterize, improve, and enhance the quality of federal documents metadata and the HathiTrust digital corpus”

For more information about HathiTrust U.S. federal documents program please visit their information page at https://www.hathitrust.org/usgovdocs

Collection Management works to build unique and dynamic collections of national significance to support all areas of scholarship at Virginia Tech. We regularly assess usage of our resources as we seek to maximize the value of our subscriptions and reflect emerging areas of research at the university.
