Streaming Media through VIVA

Thanks to CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Funds provided to support online and remote education, the statewide library consortium VIVA has added several new streaming media collections. Together, these sources bring many tens of thousands of new online videos, significantly expanding our access to streaming media resources here at Virginia Tech.

Academic Video Online (AVON) includes over 70,000 titles spanning a wide range of subject areas including anthropology, business, counseling, film, health, history, music, and more. Included are news programs, training, lectures, interviews, documentaries, ethnographies, performances, and feature and short films.

The Docuseek2 Complete Collection includes over 1,700 of the most recent and popular titles made available for streaming on Docuseek2 from their distributors, which include Bullfrog Films, Icarus Films, Film Movement, MediaStorm, First Run Features, and more. These documentary films are in a variety of subjects, including education, healthcare, science and technology, and critical thinking.

Finally, VIVA has added three SAGE Video Collections for all public institutions. The Counseling & Psychotherapy Collection addresses a wide range of issues through tutorials, interviews, and demonstrations. The Criminology Collection covers all branches of the criminal justice system. The Nursing Collection includes demonstration, tutorial, and in-practice videos as well as interviews with leaders and practitioners in the field.

New Resources Acquired in FY20

Collection Management works to build unique and dynamic collections of national significance to support all areas of scholarship at Virginia Tech. We regularly assess usage of our resources as we seek to maximize the value of our subscriptions and reflect emerging areas of research at the university. Through prudent management of our budget and data analysis we replace low-use subscriptions with new and requested resources. And, we purchase journal archives and e-book collections with one-time funds or end-of-year money. We do all this to improve access and expand the breadth and depth of the collection, and to save space by replacing and supplementing print resources with online.

Review Tools – ccAdvisor and Choice

The University Libraries now provides access to a new source for database reviews, ccAdvisor. Sponsored by the Charleston Company and Choice, this resource offers reviews of a wide range of library-related databases and platforms. Reviews include details and evaluation on user interface, product content, subscription and purchasing options, authentication methods, and more. Individuals can register at http://ccadvisor.org/user/register/

Complementing ccAdvisor is our existing subscription to Choice Reviews Online.  This database contains book reviews of over 200,000 academic monographs. The interface offers a wide range of search and browsing options to identify books of interest and the reviews provide a helpful assessment tool. Also, of particular importance, are the annual Choice Outstanding Academic Titles lists which identify the best titles of the year. Individuals can register at http://www.choicereviews.org/user/register/

Collection additions in FY17

Collection Management works to build unique and dynamic collections of national significance to support all areas of scholarship at Virginia Tech. We regularly assess usage of our resources as we seek to maximize the value of our subscriptions and reflect emerging areas of research at the university. Through prudent management of our budget we replace declining resources with new and requested resources. And, with one-time or end-of-year money we purchase archives to fill-in collection gaps. We do this to improve access and expand the breadth and depth of the collection, and to save space by replacing and supplementing print resources with online.  During the 2017 fiscal year, Collection Management added over 100 new e-resources to the collection, review the list of linked titles below to explore.

Journal Backfiles Added for DeGruyter and Wiley

The Collections and Technical Services Department continues to explore options for making more of our collections online. We have recently completed one-time purchases of journal archives from two major publishers, DeGruyter and Wiley. Collectively these collections will add retrospective coverage to several hundred additional online journals. This greatly expands access to these materials and at the same time will enable space to be freed up in Newman Library for other needs.

OVID Total Access LWW Collection

Several VIVA databases changes were announced in July.  VIVA’s subscription to one of these resources,  the OVID Total Access LWW Collection just end on August 31st.  This collection contained many medical and nursing journals.  We had access to several years worth of usage data and have now picked up local subscriptions to 22 of the most heavily used titles from the collection here at Virginia Tech.

At least two universities in Virginia opted to maintain the full package so we should still be able to fill any remaining needs via Interlibrary Loan.
