VIVA Adds More Streaming Media and DEI Content
VIVA, the academic library consortium for Virginia, regularly reviews and evaluates resources in order to best meet the needs of member institutions across the commonwealth and the faculty and students that they serve. For 2023, VIVA is adding several new databases that provide streaming media or which enhance coverage of important issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These new databases include:
- Digital Theatre+
- PsychoTherapy.net
- Gale Archives of Sexuality & Gender Parts 1 + 2: LGBTQ History Since 1940
- ProQuest Disability in the Modern World
Descriptions and links for each database may be found on the A-Z list of databases.
New DEI Content from VIVA
Thanks to generous support from SCHEV’s Fund for Excellence and Innovation, VIVA has added several important new collections that help support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
VIVA recently purchased two collections from Gale: The first is a collection of primary source documents entitled Indigenous Peoples of North America. The second was a custom collection of DEI ebooks called the Diversity Bundle Ebooks.
VIVA has also purchased two historically-oriented primary source collections from Readex: African Americans and Reconstruction, 1865-1883 and African Americans and Jim Crow, 1883-1922.
Streaming Media through VIVA
Thanks to CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Funds provided to support online and remote education, the statewide library consortium VIVA has added several new streaming media collections. Together, these sources bring many tens of thousands of new online videos, significantly expanding our access to streaming media resources here at Virginia Tech.
Academic Video Online (AVON) includes over 70,000 titles spanning a wide range of subject areas including anthropology, business, counseling, film, health, history, music, and more. Included are news programs, training, lectures, interviews, documentaries, ethnographies, performances, and feature and short films.
The Docuseek2 Complete Collection includes over 1,700 of the most recent and popular titles made available for streaming on Docuseek2 from their distributors, which include Bullfrog Films, Icarus Films, Film Movement, MediaStorm, First Run Features, and more. These documentary films are in a variety of subjects, including education, healthcare, science and technology, and critical thinking.
Finally, VIVA has added three SAGE Video Collections for all public institutions. The Counseling & Psychotherapy Collection addresses a wide range of issues through tutorials, interviews, and demonstrations. The Criminology Collection covers all branches of the criminal justice system. The Nursing Collection includes demonstration, tutorial, and in-practice videos as well as interviews with leaders and practitioners in the field.

OVID Total Access LWW Collection
Several VIVA databases changes were announced in July. VIVA’s subscription to one of these resources, the OVID Total Access LWW Collection just end on August 31st. This collection contained many medical and nursing journals. We had access to several years worth of usage data and have now picked up local subscriptions to 22 of the most heavily used titles from the collection here at Virginia Tech.
At least two universities in Virginia opted to maintain the full package so we should still be able to fill any remaining needs via Interlibrary Loan.
VIVA Database Changes
VIVA is making several important changes to its mix of databases. These are based in large part on the result of a recent RFP process. Some content is merely switching platforms while other changes may have more impact. Where necessary we are adding local subscriptions to replace heavily used resources.
Being Added – CINAHL full text, EconLit Full Text, Political Science Complete, and SocIndex. All of these are from EBSCO and are now active on our web site.
Cancellations with effective dates – EconLit via Proquest (8/1/15), PAIS (8/1/15), OVID Total Access LWW Collection (8/31/15), ProQuest Congressional (9/30/15), and Sociological Abstracts (12/31/15).
VIVA DDA pilot ending
In early 2013 VIVA launched a pilot program for Demand Driven Acquisitions of books in STEM-H disciplines. No new funding was provided in the state budget so the VIVA Collections Committee recommended the program be discontinued. Records for these items have now been removed from Summon. We have title-level usage data for the program and this has been shared with subject liaisons in the affected areas to help identify titles of potential value to our users. We are also working to implement a new DDA program locally for these call number ranges.
New Platform and Interface for LION
Earlier this year VIVA’s subscription for the MLA database moved to ProQuest. At the same time VIVA was also able to add access to Literature Online (LION) as well as premium content on the system. LION combines the texts from works of literature with resources for criticism and reference. A new platform for LION has just been released and may be previewed at http://literature.proquest.com/
Dual access will be supported into the “first half of 2014” to allow libraries time to make the transition off the legacy platform at http://lion.chadwyck.com/
New Science Collections from ProQuest
ProQuest has now provided free access for VIVA members to the ebrary Acadamic: Physical Sciences Collection (http://site.ebrary.com/lib/physsciencetitles/) with over 4,500 e-books. ProQuest has also added complimentary full-text journal collections in seven subject areas including agriculture, aquatic science, atmospheric science, biology, computer science, environmental science and materials sciences. Together these journal collections represent over 4,000 titles!
Beth Reiten from ProQuest is offering web-based training sessions on these new resources. Go to https://proquestmeetings.webex.com/proquestmeetings/onstage/g.php?p=ZbIjTrisADk6CUvsMDlLaFJOtfTiiCIpD0ut6BUQGBVhtXvoHx&t=m to sign up.
MLA moves to ProQuest with a roar
The MLA International Bibliography will be moving to the ProQuest platform effective August 1, 2013. This will provide a user-friendly interface for the leading bibliography of books, articles, dissertations, and websites on modern languages and literatures. In addition, VIVA was able to negotiate favorable pricing for access to Literature Online (LION) as well as LION Premium content. These new resources combine the texts from works of literature with criticism and reference.
